Choosing the right PP strapping band matters just as much as the strapping machine itself. Many buyers assume one strap fits every machine — but manual and machine strapping serve different jobs, and a full-auto strapping machine demands very specific strap specifications to run without jams or breakage. Here’s what you need to know.

Manual (hand) strapping

Used with manual tensioners and clamps. Manual strap is typically thinner (about 0.5–0.6 mm) and softer, so it is easy to bend and tension by hand. Since the operator controls the pull, a lower breaking strength (around 60–80 kgf) is acceptable. It suits low-volume, flexible packing where speed is not the priority.

Machine strapping

Designed for semi-auto and full-auto strapping machines that apply tension automatically. Machine strap needs higher strength (80–150 kgf), the right stiffness, a uniform surface and tight dimensional tolerance, because the machine feeds, tensions and heat-seals the strap at high speed and consistent quality.

Why a full-auto machine needs specific strap specs

Tension matching – the machine applies preset tension, so the strap must withstand it without snapping.

Core inner diameter – it must match the machine’s pay-off mandrel (commonly a 200 mm or 400 mm core).

Width and thickness tolerance – a mismatched width causes misfeeding, weak joints and wasted material.

Surface quality – a smooth, scratch-free surface prevents jams and keeps the heat seal strong.

Stiffness balance – too soft a strap jams in the track; too stiff a strap breaks on the bend path.

Consistent winding – loosely wound rolls cause banding breaks during high-speed feeding.
